Coronary Angiography Procedure

Coronary angiography is a diagnostic test used to identify blockages in the blood vessels around the heart, often recommended during a heart attack. Below is a step-by-step outline of the procedure:

  1. Preparation:

    • Patient lies down on a table.
    • ECG leads are attached to monitor heart rhythm.
  2. Sterilization:

    • The working area (wrist or leg) is cleaned thoroughly to prevent infection.
  3. Anesthetization:

    • Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area.
  4. Artery Access:

    • A needle is inserted into an artery in the wrist or leg.
    • Pulsatile blood flow is checked to confirm correct needle placement.
  5. Guidewire Insertion:

    • A thin guidewire is passed through the needle into the artery.
  6. Catheter Insertion:

    • A catheter is maneuvered into position.
    • Contrast dye is injected to visualize blood vessels on an X-ray.
  7. Image Capture:

    • Several X-ray images are taken to identify blockages or restricted blood flow.
  8. Completion:

    • The catheter is removed.
    • Pressure is applied to the entry point to prevent bleeding.
    • A bandage may be applied.
  9. Post-Procedure:

    • If blockages are found, procedures like angioplasty may be recommended.
