Thyroid Self-Examination Guide

Tools Needed

  • Mirror
  • Glass of water

Steps for Examination

  1. Position Yourself:

    • Stand in front of a mirror where you can clearly see your neck.
  2. Locate the Thyroid Gland:

    • Focus on the area of your neck just below the Adam’s apple and above the collarbone. This is where your thyroid gland is located.
  3. Normal Thyroid Appearance:

    • The area should look smooth without any visible lumps or swelling.
    • When taking a sip of water, observe the normal swallowing process.
  4. Indications of Thyroid Swelling:

    • Look for lumps or bumps in your neck.
    • Notice if the swelling moves when swallowing—a possible indication of thyroid swelling or a lump.
  5. Confirmation Steps:

    • Repeat the sipping and swallowing process several times.
    • Observe for any irregularities, asymmetry, or prominent bumps in the middle of your neck.
  6. What to Do if You Notice Irregularities:

    • If you see unusual swelling or a lump, it may indicate a thyroid disorder.
