Guide to Enabling Secure Boot on Windows 11 PCs

Overview

• Many users are receiving new Windows 11 PCs with Secure Boot disabled.
• Secure Boot and UEFI BIOS mode are necessary for running Windows securely.
• Enabling Secure Boot can be done simply by following specific steps.

Steps to Enable Secure Boot

1. Check System Information

   • Open System Information by typing msinfo32 in Search.
   • Ensure that:
     • BIOS Mode is set to UEFI.
     • Secure Boot state is On.

2. If BIOS Mode is Not UEFI:

   • You may need to back up your PC and re-install Windows.
   • This guide covers checking BIOS Mode for ASUS motherboards and will address AMD systems later.

3. If Secure Boot State is Off:

   • Secure Boot might be disabled or set to "Other OS" in the BIOS settings.

4. Verify with Windows Security

   • Open Windows Security from Search.
   • Navigate to Device Security.
   • Look for confirmation that Secure Boot is on.

5. Preparation for BIOS Entry:

   • Disable BitLocker to prevent data loss.
   • Secure Boot and UEFI changes might require BitLocker to be disabled in business settings.

6. Access the BIOS:

   • Enter BIOS by pressing the Delete or F2 key on boot, or through Windows recovery:
     • Go to Start > Power > Hold Shift + Restart.
     • Navigate through Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings.

7. Adjust BIOS Settings:

   • In ASUS BIOS for Intel 9th Generation Processors:
     • Enter Advanced Mode using F7.
     • Under the Boot tab, ensure CSM (Compatibility Support Module) is Disabled.
     • Under Secure Boot:
       • Set OS Type to Windows UEFI mode.
       • Set Secure Boot Mode to Standard.
       • Ensure Secure Boot State is set to User.

8. Older Intel CPUs or Motherboards:

   • May require loading default Secure Boot keys via Key Management.

9. Finalize Changes:

   • Save changes and exit BIOS by pressing F10.
   • Reopen System Information and Windows Security to confirm settings.
