How to Delete Windows Update Files

Objective

This is a class note/tutorial on how to remove unused Windows update files from your computer.

Key Points

What Not To Do

  • Going to Settings > Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall Updates does not delete the actual update files.
  • Uninstalling updates from here only removes the update (i.e., downgrades the system), not the leftover files.
  • Uninstalling updates can put your PC at risk, so avoid this unless you know the consequences.

How to Delete Update Files

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Storage.
  3. Click on Temporary Files.
  4. Wait for Windows to scan the temporary files.
  5. After the scan, a list will appear with various file types that can be deleted, such as:
    • Windows Update Cleanup files (only shown if available)
    • Windows Error Reports
    • Feedback Diagnostics
    • Thumbnails
    • Delivery Optimization Files
    • Antivirus temporary files
    • Other temporary files
  6. Check the boxes for the files you want to delete.
  7. Click Remove Files to free up storage.

Notes

  • If you do not see Windows Update Cleanup as an option, it may be because you have already deleted them.
  • Removing these files will not affect your system’s operation but will free up space.

Conclusion

  • This process is safer than uninstalling system updates.
