Core Sentence Patterns for Travelers
1. Asking Directions:
Pattern: Place + 怎么走 (怎么去)?(How to get to [place]?)
- Example: 去地铁站怎么走?(How do I get to the metro station?)
- Politer version: 你好,请问,去地铁站怎么走?(Hello, may I ask, how to get to the metro station?)
If You Can’t Say the Place
- Show it on your phone and say: 这里/这儿 (here)
2. Finding Something (General Inquiry):
Pattern: 哪儿/哪里有 + [place]? (Where has [place]?)
- Example: 哪儿有公交站?(Where is [a] bus station?)
3. Finding Something (Specific Inquiry):
Pattern: [Place] + 在哪儿/哪里? (Where is [place]?)
- Example: 药店在哪儿?(Where is the pharmacy?)
- Used when you know it’s nearby or in a building.
4. Expressing Needs:
Pattern: 我需要 + [noun/verb phrase] (I need [something/to do something])
- Example: 我需要买电话卡。 (I need to buy a SIM card.)
- Example: 我需要充电。 (I need to charge [my phone].)
- Example: 我需要帮助。 (I need help.)
5. Requesting Assistance:
Pattern: 能帮我 + [do something] + 吗?(Can you help me [do something]?)
- Example: 能帮我拍个照片吗? (Can you help me take a photo?)
- Example: 能帮我推荐导游吗? (Can you recommend a tour guide?)
6. “Do you have...?” (Shopping/Hotels/Restaurants):
Pattern: 你们有 + [thing] + 吗? (Do you have [thing]?)
- Example: 你们有充电线吗? (Do you have a charging cable?)
- Example: 有Wi-Fi吗? (Do you have Wi-Fi?)
- To ask for password: Wi-Fi 密码是多少? (What’s the Wi-Fi password?)
7. How Much is This?
Pattern: 这个/这个儿 + 多少钱? (How much is this?)
- Example: 咖啡豆多少钱?(How much are the coffee beans?)
- Example: 香蕉多少钱?(How much are the bananas?)
8. Asking Permission:
Pattern: 我可以 + [do something] + 吗? (May I [do something]?)
- Example: 我可以拍照吗? (May I take a photo?)
- Example: (Restaurant context) 我可以扫码点餐吗? (Can I scan to order?)
- Common for making friends: 我可以加你的微信吗? (Can I add your WeChat?)
9. Can I [do something to object]?
Pattern: 这个 + 可以 + [verb] + 吗? (Can I [verb] this?)
- Example: 这个可以退吗? (Can I return this?)
- Example: 这个可以吃吗? (Can I eat this?)
- Example: 这个可以买吗? (Can I buy this?)
10. Where Can I [do something]?
Pattern: 哪里可以 + [do something]? (Where can I [do something]?)
- Example: 哪里可以打车? (Where can I get a taxi?)
- Example: 哪里可以换钱? (Where can I exchange money?)
11. Expressing Wants/Desires:
Pattern: 我想 + [do something] (I want to [do something])
- Example: 我想买票。 (I want to buy a ticket.)
- Example: 我想吃饭。 (I want to eat.)
- Example: 我想订房。 (I want to book a room.)
12. Polite Requests (“Please give me”):
Pattern: 请给我 + [thing] (Please give me [thing])
- Example: 请给我一个袋子。 (Please give me a bag.)
- Example: 请给我一杯水。 (Please give me a glass of water.)
- Adding 可以吗 makes it even more polite.
- Always good to add: 谢谢! (Thank you!)
