Booting Windows PC in Safe Mode

This tutorial provides a simple and quick way to boot a Windows PC in Safe Mode.

For Windows 10 or Windows 11

1. Right-click the Start menu button.
2. Click Run.
3. On the Run dialog, type Msconfig and press Enter or click OK.

For Windows 7

1. Click the Start menu button.
2. Type Msconfig and press Enter.

System Configuration Steps

1. In the System Configuration window, navigate to the Boot tab.
2. If there are multiple operating systems, first select the one to boot into Safe Mode.
3. Enable the Safe Boot option.
4. Choose the desired Safe Mode type:
   • Minimal: Boots with a regular Windows desktop GUI but with minimal drivers and processes.
   • Alternate Shell: Boots into Safe Mode with only the Command Prompt interface.
   • Other Options: Similar to Minimal but with additional Active Directory repair tools and networking capability.

Switching Between Safe Modes

Booting to Minimal Mode

1. Select Minimal under Safe Boot and click OK.
2. In the System Configuration dialog, click Restart.
3. To exit Safe Mode, restart the PC. If it still enters Safe Mode, go back to System Configuration and disable the Safe Boot option.

Booting to Alternate Shell (Command Prompt)

1. Select Alternate Shell under Safe Boot and click OK.
2. To return to normal mode from this Safe Mode:
   • Execute: bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
   • Execute: shutdown /s /t 60 (Note: This reboots the PC 1 minute after execution).
