Learn how to form and use superlatives in French, following the previous lesson on comparatives.

Key Concepts

What is a Superlative?

• Definition: Compares a noun with a group to express the highest or lowest degree of a quality (e.g., "the best," "the most likely to succeed").
• Used to express "the most" or "the least."

Building Superlatives in French

Key Words

• Le/la/les plus = the most
  • Example: la plus intelligente (the most intelligent)
• Le/la/les moins = the least
  • Example: la moins inquiète (the least worried)

Example Sentences

1. Claire is the smartest girl in the class.

   • French: Claire est la fille la plus intelligente de la classe.
   • Structure: [Subject] est [noun] le/la/les plus [adjective] de [group].

2. She is the least worried about the test.

   • French: Elle est la moins inquiète du test.
   • Notes: Use "de" (or "du"/"de la") to mean "about" or "of" in this context.

Irregular (Special) Superlatives

Some adjectives are irregular and need special forms, just like comparatives:

• Bon (good) → le meilleur (the best)
  • Example: le meilleur ami (the best friend)
• Mauvais (bad) → le pire (the worst)
  • Example: le pire jour (the worst day)
• Petit (small/little) → le moins (the least)
  • Example: le moins important (the least important)

• Try describing people you know:
  • Examples:
    • "This person is the tallest."
    • "That person is the smartest."
• Think of new adjectives to expand your vocabulary.
